Josh DeWeese Artist Talk at Radius Gallery

Josh DeWeese’s work exudes ceramic wonder: artfully designed, painstakingly crafted, and ultimately given over to the whims of the kiln. He is drawn to the beauty and mystery of high temperature ceramics, to the elements of chance that occur in the firing, to the subtle qualities of raw clays and the vibrant depths of transparent glazes. His pottery summons us to touch, melding art and utility, asserting the gravitas of raw earth into our curated spaces.

DeWeese is currently a Professor of Art teaching ceramics at Montana State University in Bozeman, where he and his wife Rosalie Wynkoop have a home and studio. He served as Resident Director of the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena for 17 years. He holds an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred, and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. DeWeese has exhibited and taught workshops internationally and his work is included in numerous public and private collections

My Quest for Mexico’s Best Talavera Pottery: Part I | Fresh P

A small bowl in a gift shop in Sayulita, Mexico lead me across country in search for Mexico's best Talavera artist.

About Juan Carlos Castillo Reye’s and his company Alfareria Contemporanea
A medium sized platter takes the artist 4 hours to paint. There are ten artists working in the only factory of it’s kind in Mexico. Juan Carlos has traveled to Spain in search of inspiration for his pottery; his primary influences are from the regions of Los Moros and Talavera. His tiles are sold in Phoenix and San Diego, but his pieces are ordered and shipped individually from his WhatsApp account using his phone number. Photos are on his WhatsApp page. He does not speak English, so you’ll have to order in Spanish. The pottery is fired at 950c/1742f for 5 hours.

Korean Porcelain Trimming Skills w/ Moon Byeong Sik

On my recent visit to S. Korea I was able to connect with Moon Byeong Sik, a porcelain potter I had met a few years back. This was my first visit to his studio and he was gracious enough to offer me a wheel and some clay and we both threw pots and compared techniques. While neither of us speak too much of each others language, we were able to use the clay as a prop for conversation.

Jugtown & Mark Hewitt Pottery

Jugtown Pottery, a working pottery and an American Craft Shop, is located in Seagrove, NC in the community of Westmoore. It was started in 1917 by two artists from Raleigh, North Carolina who shared a love for pottery, Jacques and Juliana Busbee. Today Jugtown still follows the same approach to pottery as laid out by the Busbees. Master potter, Vernon Owens, with his wife Pamela and son, Travis, follow the same approach to pottery as Jugtown did when it began in 1917. They are to pottery much like Ford is to cars — a family business whose pieces have evolved in style yet have remained incredibly true to its roots.
