Imperial porcelain of Ming Dynasty meets public at Palace Museum

An exhibition of 196 sets of imperial Chinese porcelain wares dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) opened Tuesday at the Palace Museum in Beijing. The exhibits include the collections of the Palace Museum and some relics unearthed near Jingdezhen City which is well known as China's porcelain capital in east China's Jiangxi Province.

Porcelains out of Ming Dynasty imperial kilns on display

Close to 300 royal porcelain artifacts and samples from the Ming Dynasty are on show at Beijing's Palace Museum. These historical relics give visitors a glimpse of the extravagant imperial lifestyle in the Forbidden City during the 16th and 17th centuries.

France's Sèvres factory, just outside Paris, has been a mecca for ceramics for nearly three centuries. Every ten years, it's the scene of a very special event: the lighting of the great kiln. For the most recent edition, 40 unique pieces of pottery were created, then put in the furnace for 33 hours for a spectacular final result. Located on the French Riviera, Vallauris is the French capital of pottery and ceramics. This tradition dates back to Antiquity. In those days, the inhabitants of Vallauris produced culinary pottery thanks to the clay deposits in the region. In the 19th century, ceramics developed. But the 1950s were really the golden age of Vallauris, when many artists – such as Pablo Picasso – settled in the village.

For 34 years, Ardmore studios has crafted away original ceramics that have provided income to feed many families in KwaZulu-Natal province, #SouthAfrica. Trained by Ardmore’s founder Feé Halsted, 80 painters and sculptors transform African art into ornamental pieces. Items have been sold by Christie’s and Sotheby’s and since branching out into bespoke furniture, wallpaper and tableware; luxury French brand Hermès has collaborated with Ardmore. Despite its international success, it has remained true to its roots, trained and developed local artists, as well as caring for a community hit hard by HIV/AIDS. Today this studio is an institution in South Africa and continues to shape and change people’s lives.
