Earth and Fire: Anasazi Style Pottery

Watch artist and primitive potter Kelly Magleby learn about and make Anasazi style pottery. Kelly went into the backcountry of Southern Utah with a knife and a buckskin to try to learn about Anasazi Pottery by doing it the way the Anasazi did it. "Earth and Fire" is a documentary poem about a passionate artist. Funded by Primitive Found (.org) Music by Jason Shaw @ audionautix.com Check out Kelly's art at anasazipottery.net This the 1st video of 2016 for The Talking Fly short documentary project by filmmaker Steve Olpin, Enjoy!
Check out a pottery film I did a few years back:

Beautifully composed video! Conveys so much information without a single spoken word, and yet is infused with subtle, understated drama. She is truly a master of her craft.

yeah I guess if you’re the type of person who doesn’t ask questions like, “what the hell is that, why are you doing that, how do you do that.” then yes these videos are fabulous for people who just wanna look and not understand. I would have loved to know why, how, and what.

Its extremely common im these types of videos. I find it annoying.and not helpful to.learning. but this wasnt really a ‘how to’ video

5 minutes later: Oooh this isnt her page, its the documentary dudes. Oh ok

This was just amazing. Living in the wild, using natural processes and materials to make, decorate and fire clay pottery. Starting the fire by natural means and a very attractive woman… must be a god after all. That looks like heaven and pure bliss to me.

    1. thetalkingfly

thanks for checking out the video and the comment! it was a fun project.

  13. HonestDoubter

The knowledge set to get this done is simply amazing. From the hand drill fire to the making of her own brushes. That is flatly amazing.

So beautiful, peaceful, and informative! I love that there are no words, so anyone in the world can enjoy it without having to worry about language barriers. I wish it were a little longer, with more details, but you got everything across just fine. I’m sharing this one!

  15. Julie Pellegrino

As a novice sculptor, I have a tendency to obsessively over think. This was a pleasant reminder that the doing is where the truth lays. Thank you for enlightening.
