A guest panel of Asian American ceramic artists talk about their insights regarding the recent growth in occurrences of racism and violence towards the AAPI community. Join artists whose work explores this narrative — often referencing history, culture, or human nature — so that we may share in a discussion that tries to imagine what kind of art can contribute to healing and empowerment, and gives voice to the challenges Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are facing in the current culture of discrimination.
Moderated by Clay Art Center staff member Jessica Zeng, with guest panelists Beth Lo, Cathy Lu and Nikki Lau.
Beth Lo
Beth’s ceramic and mixed media artwork draws from themes of childhood, family, Asian culture and language. She received a Bachelor of General Studies from the University of Michigan in 1971, and then studied Ceramics with Rudy Autio at the University of Montana receiving her MFA in 1974, and afterwards became a Professor of Art at the University of Montana. She is currently retired.
Cathy Lu
Cathy’s work manipulates traditional Chinese art objects and symbols as a way to deconstruct the assumptions we have about Asian American identity and cultural authenticity. She was recently in a group exhibition hosted by the American Museum of Ceramic Art, Making in Between: Contemporary Chinese Americans.
Nikki Lau
Nikki was recently part of Clay Art Center’s Artist in Residence program. She was a 2010-2011 Alumni of AmeriCorps/Public Allies, resulting in her work shifting to themes of social justice and identity politics. She received her MFA with a concentration in ceramics at Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA in 2016.

We were founded in 1957 by Katherine Choy and Henry Okamoto, and today, after over a half century of growth and expansion, we're proud to serve the arts community with studio space and exhibition opportunities and engage the public and foster new artists through classes for children and adults of all levels.
